ride for clive

On Saturday, June 6th, over 100 people attended the 1st annual Ride for Clive - to honor the life of our friend who we lost last year. The ride also was held to promote bike safety on the roads - to promote understanding and a mutual respect between car drivers and bikers.

As I looked at the long line of people ready to bike the American Tobacco Trail, I had goosebumps - Clive would have been so proud. We miss you, Clivers.

the great outdoors

Cooking some dinner over the fire. A long and arduous process, but very rewarding. Luckily, we finished up before it started raining (again).

I love these trees.

The view from the top of a huge waterfall - I was proud of myself for climbing to the top.

a different perspective

I read this article last week on the new SmartSwitch prototype by some folks at Stanford.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/09/smartswitch-prototype-makes-work-out-of-the-simplest-of-things/

The basic idea: In a home wired with SmartSwitches, when one light switch is turned on or during peak hours, additional light switches become harder to physically turn on.

Although I think this is a complicated way to solve a problem (my mother ingrained the idea of turning a light out when I left the room at a very early age) I love the assumption behind it: when people meet resistance, they are more likely to give up.

Which makes me wonder - how do I handle resistance in my own life? Am I the kind of person who changes course when I meet resistance or do I try to stay with my original thought? There are good and bad outcomes to either path. One can either learn from experiences and take in all information as added value to their lives or one can stubbornly keep to the original plan without thought to why they are having to work harder - the goal ever present in their mind.

I'm torn - but introspection is something I value and I will keep this top of mind in the future. Resistance is not always a bad thing - it might be just the thing to make me stop and think once and a while.

I wonder where the doors are?
